British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.
The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of approach shafts down to the site... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.
There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.
The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.
The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This strike shows our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.
RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.
"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among thousands of UK service members stationed over the holidays. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our safety, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."
In December, the American forces conducted what it called a "major assault" on IS targets in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN estimates IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
