Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that showed that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
